Xylitol Production Room Combined Desiccant Dehumidifier

Application of Desiccant Dehumidifiers in Each Stage of Xylitol Production

1 Drying Process

Drying is a critical step in xylitol production. Wet xylitol crystals (initial moisture about 2%) obtained after centrifugal separation must be dried in a fluidized bed dryer to a final moisture content of ≤0.2% before further processing. The desiccant dehumidifier plays two important roles here:

- **Pretreatment of drying inlet air**: It supplies low-dew-point, stable dry air to the fluidized bed dryer, improving drying efficiency and reducing heat energy consumption.
- **Moisture prevention in the cooling section**: After drying, xylitol is at a high temperature (above 100°C). Rapid cooling to below 40°C can easily cause moisture absorption from the air, leading to caking. The desiccant dehumidifier, combined with a cold air system, effectively lowers the moisture content of the cooling inlet air, ensuring no moisture regain during cooling.

2 Cooling and Intermediate Buffering

After leaving the dryer, xylitol must pass through intermediate steps such as vibrating fluidized bed cooling, strong vibration sieving, and temporary storage in buffer tanks before packaging or further blending. During these steps, xylitol is exposed to ambient air and is highly prone to moisture absorption.

One patented technology provides a system solution to alleviate xylitol caking: a desiccant dehumidifier, together with a high-efficiency filter and a blower, is installed in the cold air inlet duct of the mixed bed dryer. This deeply dehumidifies the cooling air, effectively reducing the moisture content of crystalline xylitol, prolonging the non-caking time, and fundamentally alleviating caking problems.

3 Coating Workshop Environment Control

Coating is a key step for end products such as xylitol tablets and hard candies. During coating, syrup or coating liquid must form a uniform film on the xylitol surface. If the ambient humidity is too high, the coating liquid cannot dry in time, leading to sticking and caking. In severe cases, the coating pan requires frequent shutdowns for cleaning.

The desiccant dehumidifier can precisely control the environmental humidity in the coating workshop (typically set at 30%–40% RH), ensuring rapid curing of the coating layer and a smooth, non-stick surface. Some models are specially designed for coating processes, using high-efficiency imported desiccant rotors with a wide low-temperature operating range (-10°C to 50°C), meeting low humidity requirements (conventional refrigeration dehumidifiers cannot achieve below 30% RH, while small desiccant dehumidifiers can easily do so).
 
4 Packaging Process

Packaging is the last line of defense against moisture for finished xylitol products. Even if the finished product moisture content is qualified, high humidity in the packaging workshop can cause xylitol to absorb moisture during packaging, degrading quality and reducing shelf life. Studies show that when the packaging workshop temperature is set at 20–25°C and relative humidity is controlled at 40%–45%, the product appearance and hygiene conditions are optimal. The desiccant dehumidifier provides reliable humidity assurance for this purpose.

5 Storage of Raw Materials and Finished Products

Both raw materials (such as corncob powder) and finished xylitol products face moisture absorption risks during storage. In raw material storage, a dry environment created by a desiccant dehumidifier effectively prevents mold and deterioration. In finished product storage, a suitably low-humidity environment extends shelf life and reduces losses.
